The Gujarat government's Department of Science and Technology has sought Rs. 40,783 crore from the Government of India to develop the semiconductor industry in Sanand and Dholera SIR over the next six years.
AHMEDABAD: Department of Science and Technology Gujarat government has demanded substantial Rs 40,783 crore grants from the government of India (GOI) for the development of semiconductor industry in Dholera SIR region and Sanand near Ahmedabad in next six years.
Mona Khandhar, principal secretary, science & technology department informed that, "the objectives of the state government is of robust and sustainable semiconductor and electronics ecosystem in Sanand and Dholera SIR region in next six years."
"Of the five semiconductor facilities approved by the GoI under the Semicon India programme, four projects are being set up in Gujarat. A chip packaging cluster is taking shape in GIDC Sanand with major projects by Micron Technology Inc, CG Semi and Kaynes Semicon. India's first commercial semiconductor fab is being set up in Dholera SIR by TATA Electronics Pvt. Ltd. Furthermore, the Government is actively engaging with multiple ecosystem partners and several project proponents considering to set up their manufacturing units in Gujarat. The establishment of these strategic projects in the state poses a distinctive opportunity to establish Gujarat firmly on the global semiconductor supply chain by focusing on facilitating development of the ecosystem of suppliers. Infrastructure Development requires significant development and upgrading of industrial infrastructure, including utilities, logistics, and security systems, to meet global standards. Establishing a robust ecosystem of suppliers is crucial for supporting the semiconductor industry. This requires coordination among various stakeholders. Workforce development also remains a significant challenge and requires additional financial resources," Khandhar said.
Khandhar further added, "establishment of specialised manufacturing clusters in Sanand and Dholera that provide plug-and-play utilities, allowing companies to scale operations quickly and efficiently. Long-term sustainable growth of the economy driven by the semiconductor sector, contributing to GDP and regional development. Enhanced integration of Gujarat's semiconductor ecosystem into global supply chains, facilitating trade and collaboration with international markets. Enhanced Security and Logistics frameworks ensure the safety and efficiency of semiconductor operations and transportation. Positioning Gujarat as a significant player in semiconductor exports, boosting the state's international trade projected funds requirement will be around Rs.40,783 crore in next six years. We have requested the national finance commission and the government of India for special grants.
